Filament lamps, although they belong to the LED, but also outside, and structurally quite different from them. To an ignorant person in general, it may seem that this is an ordinary incandescent lamp, just a little bit “with oddities”. In fact, the filament LED lamps have combined the best qualities of the usual “Ilyich bulbs” and modern led lamps. The result was interesting, economical, ecological and very pleasant. At first glance, their purpose is not entirely clear, but after reading the article it becomes clear what it is, why you need it and how to choose it.

One of the main “tasks” for which the filament LED lamps are intended is a full-fledged replacement of incandescent lamps in lamps in style. Indeed, outwardly, it looks like a regular — transparent bulb, the absence of a huge radiator (mandatory for LED bulbs), the usual carving base. Is that the «filament» looks a bit strange, but if you turn on the light, then this difference is no longer so noticeable.

In fact, filament bulbs can be used not only in retro lamps, but generally anywhere. According to its characteristics, it almost completely corresponds to traditional LED. For example, a “standard” filament lamp (marked as A60, unlike a spherical or spherical model, marked as A95) has a power of 8 watts, a color temperature of 2700 K, a luminous flux of 980 Lm and above , and service life from 30 000 hours.

The main difference is the production technology. It is believed that before it was tested in the development of displays for mobile devices. A LED thread with blue and sometimes red microdiodes is applied onto a transparent substrate made of glass or sapphire, and then all this is covered with resin from silicone and phosphoric mixture (phosphor) from above.

The finished filaments are placed in a flask with a special gas, the composition of which producers usually keep secret — as a rule, this is helium or a mixture of gases based on it.

Some manufacturers, especially Chinese, sometimes use low-quality silicone for the phosphor. This, in the end, leads to the failure of the lamp due to the destruction of the LED thread. Another “weak spot” is a poor-quality phosphor, which causes a blue leak that can cause serious damage to a person’s vision. Therefore, it is not worth buying light bulbs of dubious production, even if the purchase seems very profitable.

This design allows you to «get rid» of the bulky radiator, typical of other LED lamps and necessary for them to cool. The gas in the flask effectively removes heat from the diodes, which are already heated less than in a conventional led-lamp, through its small size.

In the base of the light bulb there is a small board with an electronic driver circuit, necessary for converting the voltage from AC to DC. This helps avoid pulsating LEDs that are harmful to the human eye. Due to such a converter, the ripple coefficient can be reduced to 2% — despite the fact that the ripple of an ordinary incandescent bulb can reach up to 20%.

Although filament lamps are considered to be relatively new and advanced technology, they have their own advantages and disadvantages.

High light return due to the transparency of the walls of the bulb and the absence of additional optical elements. A larger angle of light diffusion compared to LED lamps with a radiator.
